Constructed in 1835, the Former Konpira Grand Theater was built to stage kabuki, a form of traditional Japanese theater. It has undergone several repairs since the 1900s, and although it was repaired again in 1972 when it was moved to its current location, all renovations have stayed true to the original scale of the building. There is seating on the first and second floors of the building which can accommodate about 740 people. There are also walkways (hanamichi) running east and west, and to the right and left of the seats on the first floor. Hanamichi are long, narrow walkways leading from the stage into the audience which the actors use during performances. The audience can view the actors up-close as they move along these walkways. Moreover, there is a revolving stage built into the center of the main stage. The revolving stage is a technique unique to kabuki, in which a round section of the main stage is cut out and replaced by a circular board that can be spun manually from beneath the stage. The revolving stage is used to provide smoother stage changes during the performance, and it also serves to make scene changes more visually appealing.
Even now, this theater hosts kabuki plays every April and draws a lively crowd. This precious building offers today`s visitors a glimpse into the excitement and prosperity that the town of Kotohira enjoyed in the past.
