On the eastern end of Goshikidai Highland midway up Mt. Aomine is Negoroji Temple, the 82nd sacred spot along the Shikoku Henro pilgrimage. Kobo Daishi (Kukai) felt the presence of the Five Wisdom Buddhas of the Diamond Realm in these five mountains and built Kezoin Temple as a place of esoteric religious training, as well as a place to pray for salvation of all living beings from suffering, where each of the Wisdom Buddhas are enshrined.
Afterwards, Chisho Daishi Enshin heard a revelation from Ichinose Myojin, then created a Thousand-Armed Kannon from the sacred tree of the Rengedani Valley as the principal object of worship, and built the Senjuin Temple. The aroma emanating from this cut stump of the sacred tree earned these temples the collective name Negoroji (Root Scent Temple).
Long ago, legend has it that there was a horrible ox demon living on Mt. Aomine who ate people. This demon was slain by a master archer, who then dedicated its horns to this temple. In front of the gate is a bronze statue of this ox demon.
